The Spell is Excanta’s first full length album and debut collaborative release from electronic music producers Matthew Parkey and Jeremy Zahrte. From banging dance floor anthems to mellow introspective scenes filled with textural soundscapes, there is a mysterious and dynamic flow to their sound. Covering a wide range of genres, with their very own unique touch of ambient, acid techno, psychedelic breaks and abstract electronica, the listener is taken through a hypnotic progression of sonic enchantment. The album begins with “Elements & Energy Ritual” an eerie atmospheric incantation that ushers forth the spirit of Excanta. The recording is scattered with breakbeat experimentations ("The Way of Life," "Akilia," "Jaw Breaker,” “Alien Acid Bath”) that invoke a further sense of intrigue and mystique. The molecular drum groove of “Funkzilla” builds the framework for a deep resounding breakthrough of melodic synth work that fills the senses of the serious listener. Also woven throughout the journey are pounding techno monsters (“Atomic Cycles,” “Sweet Muffle,” “Meteor Storm,” “Thumper,” “1313,” “Winter Excursions”) that revive a sense of revolution and a stripping down of antiquated paradigms. Ancestral wisdom echoes from the past as “Enochian Temple” shakes the earth floor, huge slamming drums are intermixed with an eastern sounding arrangement, conveying a compulsory urge to get up and dance! Something very special and unexpectedly uplifting “Juxtaposed”, welcomes now a break in the clouds; Deeply calming, soothing and emotionally stimulating. The title track “The Spell” is a wickedly mystical journey, with driving techno drums, polyrhythmic synth riffs, a fully fledged lyrical excantation and a narrative that sets up the final scene. A wave of kaleidoscopic hypnotica breaking away and pulling back so that the cycle can begin anew.
